A Newborn Session Through My Eyes as a Mom and Registered Nurse

Every newborn session is special, but experiencing them as both a mom and a nurse gives me a unique perspective.

Before becoming a photographer, I had already spent years around newborns between children of my own and working in medicine. Becoming a mother myself gave me another level of understanding of just how precious, and overwhelming, those first weeks can be.

But even with that experience, nothing truly prepares you for the moment you step into someone else’s home to photograph their brand new baby.

Each newborn session tells a completely different story.

Even With Experience, Every Newborn Is Different

Having kids of my own and working as a nurse has taught me a lot about babies. I understand how delicate those first days are, how quickly babies can get overstimulated, and how important it is for parents to feel calm and supported.

But one thing I’ve learned through newborn photography is that every baby is completely different.

Some newborns sleep peacefully through most of the session. Others want to be held, fed, or comforted more often. And that’s completely okay.

Newborn sessions aren’t about forcing moments — they’re about allowing them to unfold naturally.

Creating a Calm and Comfortable Environment

One of the things I value most during a newborn session is creating a relaxed environment for the family.

Those first weeks after bringing a baby home can feel like a blur. Parents are adjusting to a new routine, running on little sleep, and learning their baby’s needs.

Because of my background as a nurse and a mom, I understand how important it is to slow things down during these sessions.

There’s no rush.

If baby needs to eat, we pause.
If baby needs to be held, we embrace that moment.

Some of the most meaningful photos come from those quiet, unplanned moments.

The Little Details That Matter Most

One of my favorite parts of a newborn session is capturing the tiny details that parents never want to forget.

The way their baby curls up when sleeping.
Tiny fingers wrapped around a parent’s hand.
The peaceful expressions only newborns seem to have.

These are the small moments that pass quickly but mean everything to a family.

More Than Just Photos

For me, newborn photography is about more than just images.

It’s about documenting the beginning of a family’s new chapter.

Being trusted to step into someone’s home during such a meaningful time in their life is something I never take for granted.

As a mom, I understand how quickly these early days pass. As a nurse, I understand how delicate and important they are.

And as a photographer, my goal is simply to preserve those moments so families can remember them forever.

Thinking About Booking a Newborn Session?

Those first days with your baby pass by faster than anyone expects.

One minute you’re bringing them home from the hospital, and the next you’re realizing how quickly they’ve already grown. The tiny fingers, the sleepy stretches, the way they curl perfectly into your arms — these moments change so quickly.

As a mom and a nurse, I understand how emotional and overwhelming those early weeks can be. My goal during a newborn session is to create a calm, comfortable experience where you can simply slow down and enjoy being with your baby while those memories are documented.

You don’t have to worry about perfect poses or having everything figured out. The most meaningful images always come from the real moments — holding your baby, rocking them to sleep, and soaking in those first days together.

If you’re expecting or have recently welcomed a new baby, I would love to help you preserve this incredibly special season for your family.
